Frequently Asked Questions

• How do I create a new trip or trail?
  Choose Travel or Trail first on the main screen, then open the top-right hamburger menu. For Travel, use Explore Cities or select Import KML File. For Trail, use Explore Trails or select Import KML File.
• How do I add stops to a trip?
  Open your trip and navigate to the Map view. Tap Edit, then tap the + button that appears to add a new stop. You can search by name or tap the map directly to place a pin.
• How do I build and reorder a day-by-day travel itinerary?
  On the trip detail Map screen, first tap the day you want to edit. Tap Edit, then tap the + button to add places to that day. After you add at least one place, drag the reorder handle (hamburger icon) on the right side of the list row up or down to reorder. While Edit mode is active, you can tap Add Day to add a day, or Delete Day to remove a day, allowing you to shape the itinerary exactly how you want.
• How do I delete a trip?
  On the Home screen, swipe left on any trip card and tap the Delete button. A confirmation dialog will appear to ensure you don't delete it by mistake.
• Why is the distance on the Trail card different from the detail page?
  The distance shown on the main Trail card represents the total overall geographic distance of the entire trail route. However, the distance shown on the detail page is specifically calculated based only on the mentioned stops or placemarks in that specific view.
• Why does Hiking show a slower speed/longer duration than Walking in tracking?
  This is expected behavior. PathLog estimates travel time based on average speeds for each activity type. Hiking speed (~4 km/h) is estimated to be slower than brisk walking (~5-6 km/h) due to typical terrain factors. Therefore, for the same distance, Walking naturally produces a shorter estimated time.
• Are the routes in Explore Cities and Explore Trails fully accurate?
  No. Explore Cities and Explore Trails are pre-made examples built to help you understand how PathLog works and show you what is possible. Because they are samples, they might not be 100% accurate. We highly encourage you to create and import your own personal travel itineraries and hiking logs to make the app truly yours!
• How do I export my trip as a KML file?
  Inside a trip's Map view, tap the Share icon (up arrow) in the top-right toolbar. You can also export all your data (both Travels and Trails) at once from Settings → Export All Trips as KML.
• How do I import KML files back into the app?
  Go to Settings and tap Import KML File.
  - For Cities (Travel): Generate your desired itinerary with Google Gemini (or any AI), create/download it as a KML file, then import it.
  - For Trails: Create the route in Google Earth, export it as a KML file, then import it.
  If the file was previously exported from PathLog, the app automatically restores it to the correct Travel or Trail category.
• What is the recommended source for Explore Cities and Explore Trails KML files?
  Use Google Gemini, OpenAI, or Claude for Cities (Travel) itinerary KML generation, and use Google Earth for Trails KML route creation. This provides the most predictable and stable import results in PathLog.
• Is my data stored on a server?
  No. All trip data (stops, notes, KML files) is stored locally on your device. Only AI itinerary prompts are sent to the server for generation, and no account registration or login is required.
• What are the Standard plan limits?
  With the Standard (paid) plan, Travel and Trail imports/saves are unlimited. Plant ID searches can be used up to 10 times per day.
• How does the free version work for KML imports?
  Free users can preview Travel up to 5 times and Trail up to 5 times. This quota includes both Explore recommendations and custom KML imports. Saving items to the database requires the Standard plan.
• Why does PathLog need Location access?
  Location access is essential for PathLog's core features.
  - For Travel: It shows your current position on the map alongside your itinerary stops, so you always know where you are relative to your planned route.
  - For Trail: It tracks your location and records your path in real time as you walk/hike.
  Without location permission, map centering and real-time tracking will not work.
• I skipped location permission — how do I enable it?
  Go to your device Settings → Apps (or Privacy & Security) → PathLog → Location, then select "While Using the App" or "Always". Once enabled, return to PathLog to see your position on the map.
